Ten Ways to Improve Mind-Body Wellness

It’s no secret that mind-body wellness takes a conscious effort. In fact, many people may not even know where to begin when it comes to improving the mind and body connection. By consciously improving your mind-body wellness, you will experience many benefits in different areas of your life.

Below are some excellent tips to help improve your overall health and well-being:

  • Deep Breathing

The way you breathe has a huge impact on you as a whole. It affects your mind, body, and spirit. How you breathe has a huge impact on your emotions and can change or regulate how you feel.  For example, if you take short, shallow breaths, it can actually increase your anxiety and cause panic to rise. Changing to slow, deep breathing produces the opposite effect, relieving that anxiety and banishing the panicky feeling.

Mindful breathing helps relieve stress and anxiety, keeping you present in the moment. When you begin feeling stressed due to circumstances or upheavals in your life, try practicing box breathing or four-count breaths. Even a single deep breath will begin to relax your mind and body. Breathing is something you can control no matter where you are or what is happening around you.

 

  • Get Moving

It’s no secret that exercise positively affects your life in many different areas. From reducing stress to improving overall health, exercise helps to get your mind and body on track. Exercise has a positive impact on your life. It releases endorphins that make you feel good and improve your overall mood. Exercise can relieve emotional and physical pain, at least for a time.

Pick an activity you enjoy and use it to connect your mind-body-spirit. Exercise has many benefits beyond just the physical ones. It allows your mind and body to connect in new ways. Lack of exercise also increases the risk of many health conditions like heart disease and high blood pressure.

  • Sleep

The average adult needs between seven and eight hours of sleep. While some can function on much less sleep, others might need even more than those seven to eight hours. Sufficient sleep develops healthy circadian rhythms. Sleep patterns coupled with melatonin, a hormone produced during sleep, help to build healthy circadian rhythms and regulate other hormones.

When you are asleep, all of your memories get stored in your brain. This readies the brain for the next day, allowing you to focus and concentrate. All of the above impacts body functions and overall health.

Developing a healthy sleep cycle will improve mind-body wellness. Eating a balanced diet, getting sufficient sunlight, exercising, and waking up and going to bed at the same time each day will help you get the sleep you need. Lack of sleep affects your physical and mental health, which is why sleep deprivation is sometimes used as a torture technique.  

  • Mindful Eating

You are what you eat. Whatever you put into your mouth will travel through your body and have an impact on your well-being. From fast food to alcohol, poor eating habits can have a poor impact on health. A diet rich in fiber, fruits, and veggies will have a positive impact on the body and mind.

If you choose to eat unhealthy foods, this will have a negative impact on the neurotransmitters in your brain. While some foods are OK in moderation, it is important to eat mindfully in order to support a healthy mind and body.

  • Develop Your Passion

Exploring things you are passionate about helps you to develop a sense of self. Knowing what your passion is, allows you to pursue your purpose in life. Every person is born with an innate gift, (or two or three) that makes them feel useful and fulfilled.

Finding your calling and passion will help your mind and body to heal. Developing your true passion is not always easy, oftentimes it will be challenging and difficult. However, it’s worth cultivating your passion and it will only serve to strengthen your mind-body-spirit connection.  

  • Embrace Vulnerability

Vulnerability is often perceived negatively, especially in men. However, embracing vulnerability will allow you to be true to yourself and will produce strength and authenticity in the long run. While vulnerability may be viewed as shameful or embarrassing, it can actually be a point of joy and love.

Instead of trying to shove uncomfortable emotions away, hone in on them and accept them. Use them to gain a better understanding of yourself and those around you.

  • Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation go hand in hand. Simply taking 60 seconds out of your day to clear your mind is beneficial to your overall well-being. We often find ourselves getting caught up in the trials and tribulations of life. This is why it is so important to take a step back and take time for yourself.

  • Turn Stress to Motivation

Stress is often perceived as a bad thing, when in fact, stress can be the best motivator. Instead of letting stress get the best of you, use it to fuel your fire. Take all the energy you have from your stress and use it to be productive.

Instead of shutting down and believing that something is impossible, make the impossible happen. Reflect on your past and current situations and use this to change your mind about stress. Make a conscious decision to do what you can when you can, and work on accepting the things you can’t control.

  • Presence Over Perfection

Often we may find ourselves striving for the perfect life. In the age of social media, it is hard to see the troubles that lie behind the camera. Everyone seems to have a perfect life online, and we may feel like we fall short. We are so focused on trying to one-up the next person that we forget to be present and beat ourselves up over our shortcomings.

Instead of trying to constantly outdo yourself, and others, focus on enjoying the moment. Choose to lay off social media and really be present in your surroundings. This will positively impact your mental health. Constantly trying to compete with social media image is draining and unrealistic. Instead, choose to enjoy the moment you are in with the ones you love.

  • Love Yourself

One of the hardest things you may ever choose to do is truly love yourself, but this is incredibly important to maintaining a healthy mind-body-spirit. One of the best things we can do is accept our flaws and imperfections and choose to embrace them.

Instead of constantly dwelling on the negative aspects of life, choose to focus on the positive. Saying affirmations, complimenting your mind and body and celebrating small victories are great starts to loving yourself. There is only one you, so make sure to love yourself.
